Architectural Overview
The Decameron Store is one of the most iconic examples of commercial container architecture.
Designed by Studio MK27 and led by architect Marcio Kogan, it shows how creativity and practicality can transform six recycled ISO containers into an eye-catching, low-budget, high-impact commercial space.
The original concept integrated two linear container tunnels connected to a double-height hangar volume - using color, light, and openness to invite customers into the space. Huge translucent polycarbonate sliding doors blur the boundary between the store, an inner courtyard, and the bustling city outside.
Hybrid Cargotecture Adaptation
Hybrid Cargotecture Development (HCD) brings this playful, sustainable retail concept to Sri Lanka and beyond re-engineered for tropical climates, local materials, and faster modular assembly.
Our upgraded system includes:
-
All-Steel Modular Frame: engineered for high humidity and coastal durability.
-
Thermal & Acoustic Insulation: spray-foam or fiber-cement interior cladding.
-
Energy-Efficient Lighting & Ventilation: natural daylight filtering with LED and solar ventilation options.
-
Tropical Shading Strategy: adjustable façade fins, extended roof canopies, and ventilated façades.
-
Fast Deployment: pre-fabricated in our Colombo plant, installed on-site in 3 to 4 weeks.
Whether you need a pop-up boutique, café, sales office, or retail showroom, the Decameron model can be customized in any color palette, branding, or interior layout to fit your brand identity.
Design Narrative
What made the original Decameron Store brilliant was its simplicity - a refined industrial rhythm of steel boxes aligned under a translucent skin.
HCD preserves this minimal charm while adapting it for Sri Lanka’s environment:
-
Container Axes: two linear volumes forming product galleries or customer aisles.
-
Central Atrium: double-height open bay for flexible use events, exhibitions, or seating.
-
Transparency: polycarbonate or glass façades for natural light and visual connection.
-
Color: bold exterior finishes - brand-driven, UV-stable marine paint in vibrant tones.
-
Sustainability: reuse of containers, reduced site disturbance, and up to 60 % faster completion than conventional buildings.
