Smart Urban Living with Modular Efficiency
In the growing city of Santiago, Hsu-Rudolphy Arquitectos reimagined how young people can live affordably and comfortably.
Their 1,400 m² student housing project uses 70 recycled 20 ft containers, assembled into a four-story modular complex that balances low cost, fast construction, and modern design.
The goal was simple yet ambitious: to create well-designed homes for students and young professionals that could be built quickly, expanded easily, and maintained sustainably.
Design and Structure
The building uses a steel frame skeleton and prefabricated container units that fit like building blocks. Each container houses an independent micro-studio with a bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom.
The stacked and interlocked layout creates small balconies and shaded openings, giving each resident privacy and outdoor space. Six prefabricated stair blocks connect the floors and provide rhythm to the façade.
Only the foundation, first slab, and MEP system were built on site. Everything else was prefabricated and installed within weeks - proving how fast container construction can reshape dense cities.
Designed for Real Life
Each unit is small but self-sufficient, equipped with the essentials for urban living. The first floor includes garden units, while upper levels have private balconies.
Inside, gypsum-board finishes, PVC floors, and LED lighting create bright, minimal interiors. The container’s steel shell is insulated to maintain comfort through Santiago’s seasonal changes.
The design prioritizes functionality, comfort, and affordability, giving students a place that feels modern without being expensive.
