One-Bedroom Holiday Villa - Two-Story Container Home

One-Bedroom Holiday Villa - Two-Story Container Home

HCD™ TWO-STOREY HOLIDAY VILLA

A distinctive two-storey one bedroom villa created from two 20ft shipping container modules with open-plan living below and a private bedroom suite with a large upper deck above.

Designed for holiday properties, boutique resorts and compact residential sites, this layout combines indoor comfort with generous outdoor living while keeping the overall building footprint efficient.

THE DESIGN

Two-Storey One Bedroom Container Villa

This concept uses two 20ft container modules vertically to create a compact two-storey container home in Sri Lanka with clearly separated living and sleeping areas.

The lower level is dedicated to everyday living while the upper level becomes a private bedroom suite. The offset upper container creates an eye-catching architectural form while allowing a large open deck to become part of the villa.

2 × 20ft Container modules
2 Storeys Separate living and bedroom levels
1 Bedroom Private upper-floor suite
12ft × 20ft Deck Generous private outdoor area
GROUND FLOOR

Open Living, Dining & Pantry

The ground floor is planned as the main social space of the villa with an open living and dining arrangement and pantry provision.

The approximately 16ft × 20ft open area creates a more generous feeling than a conventional narrow container interior and can be arranged for lounge seating, dining and everyday entertaining.

01

9ft × 7ft Sliding Entrance

A large three-bay sliding glazed opening creates a strong visual connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

02

Open Living & Dining

The ground floor is kept open to provide flexibility for furniture arrangements and entertaining.

03

Pantry Provision

A compact pantry can be developed with worktops, storage, sink and appliance space according to the required specification.

04

Additional Fixed Glass

A side fixed glass panel helps introduce additional daylight while maintaining the clean architectural appearance.

UPPER FLOOR

Private Bedroom Suite with Large Deck

The upper container forms the private bedroom level and is arranged in an offset configuration to create a distinctive contemporary villa profile.

The bedroom includes an attached private washroom and direct access to a large approximately 12ft × 20ft outdoor deck.

This upper deck can become one of the strongest features of the property, providing space for morning coffee, outdoor seating, relaxing or enjoying views across the surrounding landscape.

01

Private Bedroom

Separating the bedroom from the ground-floor living zone improves privacy and gives the villa a more conventional residential feel.

02

Attached Washroom

The upper level includes its own private bathroom for convenient everyday use.

03

Large Sliding Glass Opening

A 9ft × 7ft three-bay sliding door can open the bedroom directly toward the private deck.

04

Panoramic Natural Light

Additional fixed glazing can increase daylight and give the upper room a brighter and more open atmosphere.

OUTDOOR LIVING

A Villa Designed Around the View

For a holiday property, resort or hillside site, outdoor space can be as important as the enclosed floor area.

The upper deck creates a private outdoor zone away from the main living floor while the large glazed openings help both levels maintain a strong visual connection with the surrounding environment.

Positioning the villa toward a garden, mountain, lake, plantation or coastal view can make the deck a major part of the guest experience.

ROOF PROTECTION

Large Roof Coverage for Sri Lanka's Climate

A separate roof system can be developed over the complete structure to provide additional protection from direct sun and heavy rainfall while contributing to the architectural character of the villa.

Wider roof overhangs can also help protect glazed openings and outdoor areas while improving comfort around the building.

Design note: Roof profile, structural supports, overhangs, drainage and final architectural appearance should be developed according to the actual site and project requirements.

Compact Permanent Home

The same configuration can be developed as a permanent one bedroom residence for sites where efficient land use is important.

CUSTOM DESIGN

Make the Villa Suit Your Site

The published design is a concept and does not need to remain exactly as shown. HCD can develop the final configuration around the site, intended use and required architectural finish.

Exterior Finishes

Keep the original container corrugation or introduce architectural cladding, feature panels and alternative colour combinations.

Deck Configuration

The upper deck size, balustrade, flooring and covered areas can be developed according to the project.

Glass & Openings

Sliding doors, fixed glazing and window positions can be adjusted to take advantage of views and natural ventilation.

Roof Architecture

The complete roof can be developed as a practical weather-protection system and as part of the overall architectural character.

Interior Finishes

Flooring, wall panels, ceiling finishes, cabinetry, lighting and bathroom finishes can be selected according to the required level.

CONTAINER VILLA SRI LANKA

A Different Approach to Building a Holiday Villa

A container villa in Sri Lanka can offer much more than a basic converted shipping container. With the right layout, structure, openings, roofing and interior treatment, container modules can become part of a complete architectural building.

This two-storey design is particularly suited to property owners searching for a compact holiday villa, prefab house, modular chalet or small modern home with a distinctive appearance.

The separation between living and sleeping levels also makes the villa feel considerably different from a conventional single-container room.

PREFAB & MODULAR CONSTRUCTION

Built with an Efficient Construction Approach

Containerized and hybrid modular construction can allow a significant portion of the building work to be completed in a controlled fabrication environment before final site installation.

This can be particularly useful for holiday properties, resorts and projects where reducing extended on-site construction activity is important.

Project programme: Construction periods depend on the final design, specification, site preparation, approvals and project conditions. HCD can provide a project-specific programme once the scope is defined.

HCD™ HYBRID CARGOTECTURE

From Container Modules to a Complete Villa

HCD develops container homes, holiday villas and hybrid modular buildings in Sri Lanka with the complete building considered from the start.

The project can include structural modifications, insulation, electrical services, plumbing, interior finishes, glazing, roofing, deck structures and final site installation.

Rather than treating the container as the finished product, the objective is to use it as part of an engineered building system suited to the intended application.
