Project Overview
This innovative home in San Francisco demonstrates how refrigerated shipping containers can become the foundation of energy-efficient, eco-friendly architecture.
Built using three 40 ft pre-insulated refrigerated containers, the home integrates the container’s natural thermal properties with smart passive design. The result is a durable, comfortable, and environmentally conscious residence that minimizes energy use year-round.
Today, similar insulated container home concepts can be built in Sri Lanka by Hybrid Cargotecture, offering homeowners a powerful balance of modern comfort, low maintenance, and sustainable design.
Design Concept and Structure
The house combines two stacked containers and a third container cut in half, arranged around a bright central atrium. The atrium functions as the home’s heart — a living room and breezeway filled with natural light. A staircase and bridge connect the upper rooms, enhancing spatial openness.
The refrigerated containers themselves provide:
-
Structural strength capable of withstanding heavy loads
-
Built-in wall and ceiling insulation
-
A weatherproof steel exterior requiring minimal maintenance
This unique construction system reduces the need for conventional insulation and cladding, shortening build time and improving efficiency.
Sustainable Detailing and Materials
Every material was selected with sustainability in mind:
-
Reused containers serve as both structure and finish
-
Blown-in cellulose insulation at the roof
-
50% fly ash concrete foundation for reduced carbon footprint
-
Low-VOC interior paints and water-based finishes
-
Bamboo flooring and natural wool carpets
Deep eaves, well-positioned windows, and passive ventilation strategies reduce cooling loads.
Rainwater harvesting, solar lighting, and daylight tubes enhance the home’s green credentials.
Adaptation for Sri Lanka by Hybrid Cargotecture
Hybrid Cargotecture can locally replicate this concept using refrigerated or cold-chain containers available in Sri Lanka, adapted for tropical conditions.
Sri Lanka adaptations include:
-
Tropical-grade reflective coatings and ventilation upgrades
-
Modified insulation layers for humidity control
-
Cross-ventilation corridors for natural cooling
-
Solar-ready power system and rainwater storage
-
Termite-resistant flooring and corrosion-protected steelwork
These make it ideal for eco-resorts, private residences, hill-country homes, or high-performance coastal retreats.
Key Advantages
-
Naturally insulated structure for superior temperature control
-
Sustainable design using recycled materials
-
Faster build with prefabricated container modules
-
Low maintenance and long lifespan
-
Modern aesthetic suited to tropical or urban living
-
Fully customizable interiors, façades, and finishes
