Architectural Overview

The Caterpillar House in Santiago, Chile is one of the most recognized shipping container homes in the world. Designed by award-winning architect Sebastián Irarrázaval, it showcases how recycled shipping containers can form a striking, high-end home with a strong sculptural presence.

Built from twelve containers, including one that serves as a cantilevered swimming pool, the design balances industrial efficiency with architectural beauty. The home sits gracefully on a sloped terrain and blends into the Chilean landscape through thoughtful layering, light, and ventilation.

Hybrid Cargotecture now brings this level of modern container architecture to Sri Lanka - offering the same sophistication, but engineered for tropical conditions and local lifestyles.

Design Concept

The Caterpillar House was completed in just eight months - nearly half the time of a traditional home - and at one-third of the usual cost. It demonstrates the power of modular building systems to create spacious, elegant living environments without compromising comfort or design.

Each container has been positioned to maximize natural light and cross-ventilation while framing panoramic views. The upper level is supported by a large steel cross-beam, creating long, open interior spaces below and floating bedrooms above. The open-top container-turned-pool adds a playful and luxurious touch.

Material and Construction

  • 12 shipping containers cut, welded, and placed with precision

  • Steel cladding exterior and polyurethane spray insulation for energy efficiency

  • Steel posts and beams for stability and load distribution

  • Low-E glass windows for daylight and energy performance

  • Open terraces and decks designed to merge indoor and outdoor living

Hybrid Cargotecture adapts this system for Sri Lanka using marine-grade steel coatings, high-performance insulation, and reflective roof finishes that keep interiors cool even in coastal or hill-country climates.

Living Experience

The home offers a unique spatial experience where structure and nature coexist. The living areas open to the outdoors, while private spaces remain serene and shaded. Every section of the house is designed with a purpose - from the sun-drenched living area to the pool container that extends over the landscape.

In Sri Lanka, this model can be reimagined as a luxury container villa, family home, or boutique retreat that combines art, sustainability, and modern engineering.
