Barneveld Noord Shipping Container Railway Station – Netherlands
Original Design: NL Architects
Build Partner: Strukton
Containers: 6 × 20 ft and 1 × 40 ft
Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Year: 2013
Architectural Overview
The Barneveld Noord Station is one of the most creative examples of container-based public infrastructure in Europe.
Designed by NL Architects, this modular railway station was built from seven shipping containers arranged to create a complete passenger facility that feels both playful and efficient.
The design combines a waiting lounge, café, restrooms, technical units, and a striking clock tower, all made from recycled containers. Its clever composition turns steel boxes into a sculptural and functional public space.
Hybrid Cargotecture builds similar modular transport and civic facilities across Sri Lanka. These structures can serve as bus terminals, public rest stops, train station extensions, or coastal ferry points - combining speed of construction with durability and visual appeal.
Design Concept
The Dutch government initiated a project called Prettig Wachten (“Pleasant Waiting”) to make small stations more welcoming and safe.
Barneveld Noord embodies this idea with bright colors, human scale, and an inviting layout. The containers were arranged in two levels, forming both enclosed spaces and open shelters for travelers.
-
Ground level: Glass-walled waiting area and café.
-
Upper level: Containers for utilities, storage, and an open double-height roof space.
-
Vertical 40 ft tower: Houses a washroom, clock, and a glass roof topped with a golden chicken weathervane, symbolizing the town’s history as the “egg capital” of the Netherlands.
The project shows that with imagination, even a small unmanned station can become a place people enjoy.
Structural and Material System
The structure is built entirely from standard ISO shipping containers modified for public use.
The containers were cut, welded, and combined to form a rigid framework anchored to a concrete base.
A mix of glass, steel, and light-colored finishes ensures a welcoming atmosphere with natural light and safety at night.
For tropical adaptation, Hybrid Cargotecture applies the same principles using:
-
Ventilated container walls and heat-resistant coatings
-
Cross-ventilation and solar-assisted lighting
-
Anti-corrosion marine steel finishing for coastal durability
-
Prefabricated steel foundations for quick installation
Functionality and Social Impact
What makes this project remarkable is not only its design but its purpose.
The station created opportunities for local employment by including a bike repair shop run by differently-abled individuals.
This blend of accessibility, community engagement, and architectural innovation is exactly what Hybrid Cargotecture promotes in Sri Lanka - smart, modular public buildings that create real value for people and places.
Sri Lankan Applications
Hybrid Cargotecture can design and build similar facilities across the country for:
-
Small railway or bus stations
-
Ferry terminals and ticketing offices
-
Tourist information centers
-
Public washroom complexes
-
Community or rest pavilions
Each project is built off-site in our Colombo facility and installed on-site within weeks, reducing cost and disruption while maintaining international standards of safety and design.
