Glassberg Container House – Reinvented for the Tropics by Hybrid Cargotecture
A 2,000 sq.ft. Architectural Landmark Reimagined for Sri Lanka
Original Concept: BNIM + Home Contained (Debbie Glassberg), Kansas City, Missouri
Sri Lanka Adaptation & Build: Hybrid Cargotecture Development (HCD)
Container Modules: 5 × 40ft High Cube
Bedrooms: 3 Bathrooms: 3 Levels: 2
The Glassberg House in Kansas City proved that shipping containers can transcend industrial roots to become expressive, light-filled, and deeply human homes. Formed from five high-cube containers stitched together by a steel and concrete frame, the design celebrates three interlocking spatial types:
-
Container Space – private enclosures for rest and retreat.
-
Contained Space – fluid zones formed between modules for family life and connection.
-
Uncontained Space – decks, gardens, and the edible rooftop that blend architecture with nature.
Hybrid Cargotecture now brings this concept to Sri Lanka-refined, engineered, and adapted for tropical living. The result is a luxurious yet sustainable hybrid home that merges global cargotecture innovation with local craftsmanship and climate intelligence.
Design Philosophy – From Industrial to Inspirational
At HCD, we view every container as a building block of possibility.
The Sri Lankan reinterpretation of the Glassberg House transforms steel modules into a bioclimatic family home featuring:
-
Passive cooling architecture with cross-ventilation corridors and shaded voids.
-
Ventilated double-skin façades that protect interiors from tropical heat.
-
Solar-integrated roofing with an optional green roof for urban biodiversity.
-
Hybrid structure combining steel containers and reinforced concrete cores for open, column-free interiors.
Every module is precision-fabricated, thermally insulated, and pre-engineered for rapid assembly-delivering a 2,000 sq.ft. residence in 12–16 weeks.
